What Is Tremie Pipe?

Tremie pipe are device used to put concrete in the water. It is used for foundations, piling work diaphragm walls, caissons foundations under water and more.

A tremie pipe is constructed of plastic tubes or a rigid metal and the size of the pipe varies from 20 to 30 centimeters.

In the bucket with the lowest dump concrete is pushed by the water into the form of a bucket or water-tight container when it reaches the point of deposition, the bottom bucket mechanism opens opened automatically and the entire concrete is drained slowly.

This method won't give the desired result because some cement washing will occur.

In some instances there are times when a dry or semi-dry mix of concrete, coarse and fine aggregates is packed into cement bags. This bagged concrete is then deposited on the bed beneath the water.

This technique also doesn't provide a satisfactory concrete because the concrete mass is packed with voids and the gunny bags that are putrescible. The Tremie pipe method for concrete placement under water is a good method that is widely used across the globe.

"Tremie," the word "tremie" comes of the French word "hopper."

Tremie Method of Underwater Concreting

Tremie pipes are pipe that has an approximate diameter of 20 centimeters that can be easily coupling to allow for an increase or diminution of length. A funnel with a wide opening is installed to one end of the tremie pipe that permits pouring concrete quickly.

The bottom part is shut with a plug or sheet of polyethylene cm like material. It is then lowered lower. The water remains calm in the area where the concrete needs to be put.

Because the pipe's end is blocked, there is no way for water to be able to enter the pipe. The concrete should be a good level of 15 to 20 cm when it is poured inside the funnel.

Then concrete is poured on top of the funnel. Once all the length of the pipe is saturated with concrete the pipe is then raised and given a small jerk.

The care is taken every day to ensure that the lower part of the tremie pipe immersed in wet concrete. The concrete at the time the pipe gets released. This process continues up to the point that the cement level rises over the level of water.

If it is done correctly, this method can be beneficial in that the concrete doesn't get affected by water, except for the layer above. The top layer is cleaned or cut away to eliminate the affected concrete at the conclusion of the process.

Tremie Equipment

Tremie seal

To prevent the mixing of concrete and water inside pipes, a wood pipe plug put in to seal off the ends of the pipe. This stops water from getting in into the pipes and helps keep it dry.

Once the pipe has reached the desired position, the concrete is poured to cracks the seal. Then the concrete is released from the pipe, creating a seal by collecting at the lower part of the pipe.

Applying the concrete

When the concrete has been poured, the pipe's mouth should be submerged for a minimum of 1 1.5 millimeters in concrete in order to keep water out of the pipe.

The flow rate of concrete is managed by lowering and raising the pipe. Any an increase or decrease in the concrete discharge can indicate the loss of the seal. Hence, the flow of concrete must be monitored continuously and closely.
